Brother

To the brother that I lost and to the stranger that I found,
I can still here your voice singing to the radio, you’re in the bathroom styling your hair and bouncing on the floorboards. Mums banging on the ceiling telling you to turn down the racket, and I’m curled up on the window ledge looking out to the back yard, you always promised you’d one day clean up. That day will never come. I can remember you rocking me, as mum thundered at dad. I can remember you hushing me, signing an old lullaby mum would sing before she got ill. I can hear the shouting, the fists the punch echoing in my mind.

ScribblesThere are times in your life, whether they be when you are thirty, forty, or in my case 16, when you are hit, positively knocked off your feet, by a wave of age. It may sound silly for someone so young to feel it so early on in life, but feel it, none the less, I did. It was strange. A sort of longing for the past. A moment of picking up a picture and realising that that time and that place, often those people, are gone forever. Or at least, the them that exists in the photograph is gone, never to be recaptured. With people, the faces lengthen and grow more wrinkled and serious. Just a thought

Eighteen
a realisation.

The other day I went for a walk, and I couldn’t stop smiling.

I had discovered something I had never thought before, or not thought with much care.

My life is going to be filled with mistakes, with anger, with sadness ,frustration and arguments with loved ones.

I will fall in love

and I will fall out of love.

I will be hurt.

I will pick myself up when I am down.

I will become apart of someone else’s life, and they will become part of mine.

I will get upset over the silliest little things.

I will find friends, and lose them, I will build new bridges with old friends.

I will smile for all the shit that the years will bring, and for all the happiness the years will bring to both mine and others lives.

I will smile because life, when reflected upon, is filled with so much colour it’s astonishing.

Life is overwhelmingly beautiful.
